What Happened to My Pen Pal?

Being on the other side of the world away from friends and family has me thinking about writing and how we used to keep in touch before the age of Twitter, Facebook, and blogs.

I remember hearing an interesting story on the radio before we left about two women, probably in their late 50s, who had been pen pals since 1960. Lifelong pen pals, NPR called them. The two met over the written word when they were in fifth grade. Since then, they've written at least one letter to each other every year and they finally met earlier this year, after 51 years of being, how do you say, virtual friends?

NPR interviewed both women for the story (listen and read the transcript here) and I couldn't help but think of the one or two childhood pen pals that I kept for short periods of time. They were mostly girls I met at summer camp, and the letters eventually fizzled once school started up again.

It seems like it would almost be impossible to have a pure pen pal these days--someone you send hand-written letters to and then receive the same thing back. Our addictions to check and respond to tweets and Facebook updates sort of removes the anticipation of waiting for a letter or having to formulate a long, hand-written response.

I guess e-mail pen pals are still a thing. I know I have a few people I exchange frequent e-mails with and I usually take some time to respond. I guess I just miss the actual writing part. So, how can I get back into the habit? Buy some beautiful new stationary, of course.

Perhaps something monogrammed?

Do you still write letters? Do you like receiving letters in the mail? Send me an e-mail with your address and maybe I'll send you a postcard with a nice note, all the way from Australia and/or New Zealand!

Vacation Reading

I've got a nice hefty list of books to read during our honeymoon. I love vacations because they're THE best time to pick up all those books I've been meaning to read. I have quite the collection of e-books downloaded to my trusty new iPad, and I plan to make a decent dent in my list by the time the trip is over.

Here's what we've got:

Steve Jobs

steve job biography

Probably not the most titillating read, but I couldn't be more intrigued considering his recent death and the fact that publishers pushed the release date up by a month.

The Marriage Plot

the marriage plot jeffrey eugenides

My favorite author releases a new novel just a couple of weeks before we jet for the honeymoon. Of course I'm going to read this one. Jeffrey Eugenides' stories just suck you in--perfect for long plane rides.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

7 habits of highly effective people

I actually started reading this book a while back after multiple recommendations from people. At first I thought it was just another self-help book, but it's not. You can sort of think of it as the bible for personal change without being preachy. While it's engaging, I'm not sure if it's my first pick for honeymoon reading. I'm still going to bring it along just in case I get a hankering for some personal change.

The Help

I'm probably the last person in the world to read The Help. I've only heard good things!

What are you reading right now? I'm open for more recommendations!

How to Style a Top Knot Bun

Turns out I've actually missed having long hair. It's been YEARS since I've been able to style a decent pony tail or set of milkmaid braids. One of the looks I'm loving to style right now is the top knot, which is just a cute little bun that sits nicely on top of the head. I feel like I can wear my hair like this pretty much anywhere and at any time: to the gym, work, dinner, dancing, date night, where ever. It's simple and chic at the same time.

Only recently did I discover just how easy this look is to style. Just three basic steps, and you're done!

1. Put your hair in a pony tail at the top of the head with a rubber band.
2. Take your hair and twist it around the top of the pony tail. I usually leave the knot fairly loose.
3. Secure the knot with a second rubber band.
4. Loosen the hair around your scalp a little bit if you're going for a less-polished look.

And you're done!

If you're looking for a variation of this style, check out this low knot bun that's just as easy to tie.

Style Post: Minty Fresh

Right now Kyle and I are in Los Angeles. Our flight for New Zealand leaves around 11 p.m. and we're just passing the time by hanging out with Kyle's dear friends, some who we even just saw at the wedding!

The weather is cool and crisp here. I was so tempted to pack all my favorite layering pieces for our 1-day stay. Too bad layers aren't exactly fitting for the Australia/New Zealand summer. But I've got one more fall fashion post for you before I go on another binge full of denim cut-off shorts, strappy sandals, and loose, light-weight tops.

I wore this outfit a couple of weeks ago right before the wedding, just when it started to feel like fall in Austin. It was 55 or so degrees early in the morning and my mint blue wooly sweater was just begging to be worn. I immediately took advantage of this opportunity to actually dress for fall in Texas. So off with a wool sweater, jeans, and boots I went.

Along with my cripsy clean minty fresh sweater, I sported a brand new do. I had just paid a visit to my hair stylist to get my locks in tip-top shape for the wedding. We went with a light trim and a darker, richer shade of brown. Finally a good hair day.

All the clutches I own are pretty casual, so I knew I needed something more versatile that I could use day or night. I thought this metallic gold one from Madewell would go with any casual or evening look. Plus, it's shimmery.

[J.Crew sweater and shirt; Madewell jeans, booties (last seen here), and clutch; Tiffany's necklace (old gift from mom)]

Thanks for sticking with me while I'm "out of the office." Stay tuned for a few outfit, food, and adventure posts from Australia and New Zealand!

P.S. We're still taking recommendations for places to go, eat, and shop while we're over here!

Spooky and Spectacular

Hello folks. I'm a married woman now. And I feel awesome. The wedding was perfect, and it was the most wonderful day of my life. I cannot wait to see pictures and post about the day and all the fun details. It was just a blast.

Today we start the first leg of our honeymoon by leaving for Los Angeles. We're staying with some friends for a night and then jetting off for Auckland Wednesday evening. While I'm SO excited for our trip to start, this means we're going to miss all the Halloween festivities! Every year I forget to put an elaborate costume together, and I usually try to steer clear of all the downtown Austin craziness. But I can't help but continue to fall in love with the spookier and seductive side of fashion and style around this time of year.

Starting with the Vera Wang Fall/Winter 2012 collection, which was full of nude, black, ruffles, and tulle.

I love how this beautiful crocheted choker looks like a web resting around the neck.

I love dark/eerie vintage-looking decor year-round. We bought a couple of these cute dictionary prints when we moved into our apartment--one with bats because I have a thing for them, a bear, and some vintage hot air balloons. This little bird cage print felt extra cute and spooky for the season.

I also feel like vintage photos of families and couple are kind of spooky. This one is also sort of sweet because it's the couple on their wedding day. They look happy, don't you think?

How are you celebrating Halloween? I can't wait to see what the popular costumes are this year!

Today I Become a Mrs.

I'm getting married today to the most wonderful man I know. How does it feel? Pretty wonderful.

Last night my papa gave a nice little toast at the rehearsal dinner. He spoke about what it felt like to hear his daughter talk about how she'd fallen in love and how Kyle was the one. We feel so loved right now. I'm so excited for today.

Inspired by (Weddings)

Two days. That's it. All the planning and ideas are about to be real. It all feels sort of real already because family and friends have started to arrive. Like I said earlier this week, I'm ready.

I shared a bit of wedding inspiration on the blog a while back. Today I wanted to post about some of the other images and weddings that have inspired us throughout this entire process

Cakes and Colors

Max and Margo's wedding, which I found over on My Sweet and Saucy, was full of adorable handmade details. I fell in love with the rich, playful colors of the streamers, flowers, and plush heart pillows. I just adore the uneven textures of the cake, and the candy apples seem so perfect for a fall wedding.

[I love this picture of the couple looking at their beautiful setup. And the streamers!]

Ivory Clusters

We knew we wanted lots of colors incorporated into our decor, but choosing flowers and colors for the centerpieces was one of the biggest challenges! I went back and forth over garden roses and gerbera daises. It finally hit me after my third trip to the florist--clean ivory and white. I thought arrangements of simple, dainty white flowers would stand out amongst all of the other colorful elements we have going on. This cute little arrangement of various white flowers and mismatched bottles is just the kind of look we're going for.

Embraced by Nature

This image of Ashley and Kemble on their wedding day is stunning. They were going for an old Hollywood look on a farm. I think this image captures the Hollywood glamor, especially in Ashley's hair and dress, along with the insane beauty of the surrounding trees.

Vintage and Handmade

I love all the vintage and romantic details of Courtney and Drew's wedding. I thought the bridesmaids' baby's breath bouquets were surprisingly vibrant, and I just really fell in love with the look.

These are just a few of the images that inspired us. I can't wait to see how all our details come together.

Style Post: Cabin Sweater

I'm open for any excuse to wear a cabin sweater. That's what I always say, anyway. Temperatures are slowly starting to drop around here, and mornings are nice and chilly. Chilly enough for me to think I can get away with wearing a three-quarter sleeve cabin sweater. I'm getting away with it alright.

I saw this sweater at Madewell as soon as the fall collection launched, which feels like ages ago! This was my first chance to wear it and I felt mighty cozy it in.

The jeans are also very new, and they're probably the lightest pair of blue denim that I own. This initially made me nervous because I was worried about accentuating the hip area. Maybe it does here, or maybe it doesn't. I look forward to experimenting with them anyway.

I'm thinking of taking this sweater with me on the honeymoon. But considering that it's going to be summertime in Australia and New Zealand, I should probably think again. I'm honestly not completely sure what I should pack along. My spirit is saying FALL but my brain is reminding me to check the weather. It's going to be warm.

I don't know what's happening here with the sticks.

[Madewell sweater; J Brand jeans; J.Crew boots (last seen here) and bracelet; Ray-Ban glasses]

Now only if it was cool enough to wear some of my heavier wooly sweaters and jackets. Or maybe even one of these trench coats.

Anyone else still craving cooler weather?

P.S. It's wedding week!

Hunger Pains

I've been having some serious cravings lately, but I'm trying to be really good before the wedding. I don't think stress eating would work in my favor right before the big day.

In addition to cheese, butter, and bread, I'm craving sweets. Delicious, yummy sweets that look like this:

What do we have here: s'mores pudding, chocolate peanut butter cups, icebox cake, and a donut birthday cake. This would be the life, I tell ya.

So, what are you craving?

P.S. You can check out the rest of my foodilicious pins and my other boards on Pinterest

Wedding Nerves

It's only a matter of days now, and I'm starting to get antsy. Kyle and I have been planning this wedding bash for almost 18 months. A really long time. Some people would probably say 18 months is too long, and I'd probably agree. But an 18-month engagement worked out pretty well for us. We're both very busy people, so having more than enough time to think, plan, and make things happen has been ideal. I don't operate well under stress, so being able to spread the planning process out over many months truly helped mitigate all that.

[Picking up our marriage license.

And now I'm feeling slightly stressed because it's almost here. Not because there's so much still to do (there isn't) and not because I'm nervous about marrying my best friend (not really), but because this is all about to be over. All the wedding planning, thinking, and worrying is about to be a thing of our past, and that's good. I'm ready for all that to be over and done with. But I guess I'm a little stressed because it's all about to become so real. This entire time the idea of "our wedding" has been this imaginary thing in my head, detailed out on spreadsheets and inspiration boards, packed up nicely in dozens of cardboard boxes in our dining room, ready to take center stage on October 22.

I think we're both ready. Thanks for letting me vent, blog.

What kind of nerves did you have leading up to your wedding day? How did you deal with them?

My Best Friend Is Back!

This is so exciting! My bridesmaid and best gal pal is flying into Austin today! She's been in South Korea for the last 3 months or so, and now she's back for a couple of weeks for all the wedding festivities! I can't wait to catch up and hear all about her adventures over there. While the next week is going to be slammed with wedding stuff, it's going to be super nice having her around to play and gossip like besties again.

Speaking of friends, looks like friendship bracelets are totally back in a sort of high-low, mix-it-up kind of way. I spotted this one over on Refinery29:

I love the knots, the clasp, and the metal pieces. I'll take two for me and my bestie, please.

P.S. What are you favorite ways to catch up with friends? Brunch? Drinks? Board games?

Goodie Bags

Kyle and I are starting to plan for our honeymoon. If I had any brains at all I would take advantage of my girl Laurel, personal stylist at Trophy Boutique. What I would do to have someone help me sort, pack, and pre-style each and every item of clothing I bring on this trip. But sadly, there just isn't any time to even think about packing until the day before we leave. Oops!

One thing Kyle and I HAVE done already to prepare for the trip is purchase some brand new (and matching) suitcases. I know, I know--that probably sounds pretty cutesy. But we both needed super functional and affordable suitcases and everything we've owned until now is old, broken, or just plain worn out. So we picked up a couple of basic black 4-wheel rolling suitcases. They are way too functional to be cute, so I'm not inspired to post a pic on the blog yet. But all the suitcase shopping got me excited to find some extra cute luggage for those trips when fabulous AND functional are top priorities.

The Cutest of Carry-Ons

fjallraven teal green mini day pack

Swedish company Fjallraven makes the cutest darn bags for travel and backpacking. These little mini day packs would make such a perfect carry-on or everyday purse if you're going for a casual look. And they come in so many fun colors, like this lovely teal green. If you're in Austin and want to check one out in person, I know Bows + Arrows carries several sizes and colors in this day pack.

Solid and Sporty

le sport sac duffle bag

One of my oldest bags is a Le Sport sac duffle. I bought it in 2005 and still use it to this very day. I even took it with me on a 70-day road trip during college. That's how tough this sucker is. It's definitely worn, but Le Sport Sac bags last! That's why this rounded duffle would be more than perfect for the simple and sporty traveler.

Handsome and Vintage

jcrew men's montague leather weekender

I knew I'd find some good stuff over in J.Crew men's accessories. Love, love, love this classic leather bag. It's simple and looks like something Don Draper would take on a short trip.

Heavy Duty

jcrew Swaine Adeney Brigg trolley suitcase

And now for the behemoth of luggage--the 22 inch Swaine Adeney Brigg trolley suitcase. It's actually not that big of a suitcase. But the meticulous construction and craftsmanship certainly calls for the hefty price tag. I don't think I would ever check this bag on a plane though. I'd take it along on a cruise or a fancy four-day getaway.

Do you have a favorite piece of luggage that you like to travel with?

Style Post: The Librarian Look

High bun + thick glasses + a clean button-up shirt = my favorite librarian look.

I love throwing my locks up into a super high bun, especially when I'm working with day-old hair. Put that with some specs and a collared shirt and I've got myself one librarian look alike. This puff sleeve popover really is one of my favorite new shirts. If I'm going for a more serious librarian/office look, I'd probably style it with one of my pencil skirts and less-wackadoo shoes. But when I'm going for a look that's slightly reserved but not afraid to show some personality, I'm sure to include pieces that add some flare, like fun shoes, a flowy skirt, and red lips.

And I love me some Ruby Woo lipstick from MAC, which I just blogged about yesterday. I'm convinced this is one of the easiest shades of red to wear. It's so creamy and classic.

What do you think of the librarian look?

All Made Up: Lips

I think I've entered my lipstick phase. I've always liked makeup, very much indeed. But only recently have I actually enjoyed shopping for a new shade every once in a while. And my lipstick brand of choice? MAC, definitely MAC. But I'm always up for trying something new.

A few weeks ago I picked up the richest shade of red called Ruby Woo. It's definitely eye-catching, and I love the matte finish.

And more recently I was on the hunt for a lighter shade, something that still gave my lips some color without overpowering my entire face. I went for a glossier shade of pink called Speed Dial. At first I thought it was a bit too Barbie pink, but then I changed my mind. I like it.

And the secret to wearing any bold shade of lip color? Lip primer. Yes, always wear lip primer. Apply some primer before your lipstick and the color will last. No peeling or fading. MAC has a fantastic primer, but I've been trying Lip Insurance by Too Faced and I'm loving it.

Do you have a favorite shade of lipstick?

Bangspiration

My hair has become helpless. I've been growing it out for more than a year for the wedding and finally reached that stage where all I am is bored with it. Hair boredom is what it is. Oddly enough, the only thing I want is to have my bangs back. Yes, the same wretched bangs that have been the sole sore spot of the growing out process. But I don't care. I miss them, and I want to try wearing them for a while with longer hair.

Thankfully there are plenty of inspiring young ladies out there rocking long hair with bangs. I'll be looking at these girls when it comes time to redo my do after the wedding.

Keiko of Keiko Lynn: a pretty girl with pretty bangs that sweep every so nicely across the forehead.

Chan Marshall of Cat Power: I've always admired Chan's super straight hair and bangs.

Zooey Deschanel: She's probably the queen of uber-blunt bangs. I like her with the fringe and the side sweep.

So tell me--what do we think of short bangs with long hair?

Let It Rain, I Say

Because the last thing I need is rain on our wedding day. Sheesh. I've been hoping and hoping that it won't rain on October 22, but I promised myself that I wouldn't freak out if it did rain because there's no point. I have no control over it.

And that's why it's always good to have a plan B, just in case any part of the wedding is set to take place outdoors.

I won't freak out. We have a plan B. Texas needs rain.

But if you'd still like to throw some good vibes my way, please do!

Aside from wedding worries, I'm overjoyed for today's rain, as most Texans must be.

In addition to cute, wet poodles, today's rainstorm is just an awesome excuse to bust out my rain booties, which I've hardly had a chance to wear in the last year:

How are you enjoying this wet, wet Sunday?

How to Tie a Loopty-Loop Circle Scarf

One of my favorite accessories to wear is the loopty-loop circle scarf. I'm not really sure if I just made that name up, but it's the best way I can describe this look. The loopty-loop circle scarf is pretty easy to tie and you can use almost any type of scarf, from long skinny ones to giant rectangular scarves. Each will create a different look and a new fun way to wear your favorite scarf.

how to tie a circle scarf

1. Tie the ends of the scarf together into a nice little knot so you have one giant circle scarf.
2. Put the giant circle scarf around your neck.
3. Grab both sides of the scarf and pull each side in the opposite direction so you create a second circle in front of you.
4. Place your head through the second circle.
5. Fluff out the scarf and style the circles how you want. I like to place the knot higher up and off to the side.
6. Enjoy wearing and styling a new look!

What do you think? Easy enough? Here are four more ways to wear your favorite scarves, just for you.

Style Post: I'm All About the Scarves

I'm all about scarves this week. Why do I love them? Because they are one of the easiest ways to jazz up a bag, neck, hair-do, or complete outfit.

Earlier this week I wrote about how I'm craving more unique silk and vintage scarves. And that's where this post comes in! I found this adorable silk scarf at my new favorite vintage boutique, Feathers (read about one of my other favorite Feathers finds). I was immediately drawn to the color combo: a luscious brown that reminds me coffee with good creamer and bright blue.

I was in the mood for a styled, easy-going look that still had a bold element or two. I think the bright, loosely hanging scarf helped me achieve just that.

I was also in the mood for a new hair style. Lately I've been experimenting with middle parts and braids. My next challenge was working two braids into a figure eight just above the nape.

Fun times. In other news, we are well under the 30-day wedding mark. Kyle and I both feel VERY, VERY busy, but also very, very organized and excited for the day to arrive.

Thanks to all our friends and family who've been overwhelmingly supportive and continuously offered to help. While it's a busy time, everything seems pretty manageable, which is one of the perks of having a really long engagement, I'd say!

Have a wonderful day!

The Fabulous Trench

I love a good trench. It's one of those classic pieces that looks so effortless and cool on almost anyone. I finally found my first long trench coat and I can't wait to wear it with everything. I see myself wearing it a lot with skinny jeans and booties or with shorter dresses and tights.

Love the way these gals styled their trenches:

But my favorite trench right now has got to be the Encore Trench from J.Crew:

I love the silhouette and the flirty flair on the skirt. And it comes with detachable tulle to wear on the inside of the underskirt to give some extra poof. Huzzah!

Do you have a favorite trench? How do you style it?

5 Fun Ways to Wear a Scarf

I wear scarves pretty much year round. Less so in the summer time to avoid catching sweat scarf, but fall, winter, and spring are my favorite seasons to get scarffy.

While I love wearing scarves, I tend to always wear the same ones, which leaves me with an old and outdated scarf collection season after season. I'd like to change things up a bit and invest in more silk, vintage, and unique scarves. And perhaps one or two in basic colors wouldn't hurt either.

But here are the scarves I'm loving right now and my five favorite ways to wear them:

five fun ways to wear a scarf

1. The basic loose scarf (Madewell)
2. The tight loopty-loop circle scarf (Madewell) - tutorial coming soon!
3. The double-knotted scarf (J.Crew)
4. The head scarf (unknown)
5. The giant loopty-loop circle scarf (Free People)

Gotta love those scarves. And Bri Emery of designlovefest really loves scarves too! She made this cute little video of her partying with all of her scarves and I just had to include it in this post:
