Style Post: Cabin Sweater

I'm open for any excuse to wear a cabin sweater. That's what I always say, anyway. Temperatures are slowly starting to drop around here, and mornings are nice and chilly. Chilly enough for me to think I can get away with wearing a three-quarter sleeve cabin sweater. I'm getting away with it alright.

I saw this sweater at Madewell as soon as the fall collection launched, which feels like ages ago! This was my first chance to wear it and I felt mighty cozy it in.

The jeans are also very new, and they're probably the lightest pair of blue denim that I own. This initially made me nervous because I was worried about accentuating the hip area. Maybe it does here, or maybe it doesn't. I look forward to experimenting with them anyway.

I'm thinking of taking this sweater with me on the honeymoon. But considering that it's going to be summertime in Australia and New Zealand, I should probably think again. I'm honestly not completely sure what I should pack along. My spirit is saying FALL but my brain is reminding me to check the weather. It's going to be warm.

I don't know what's happening here with the sticks.

Now only if it was cool enough to wear some of my heavier wooly sweaters and jackets. Or maybe even one of these trench coats.

Inspired By (Jean Seberg)

Have you seen Breathless, the 1960 film by Jean-Luc Godard featuring Jean Seberg? It's sort of a classic and was my first introduction to Seberg's sweet style. The following Seberg looks are my favorites: a perfectly tailored dress in classic stripes, a chunky knit cowl neck sweater, and high-waisted pants with a simple shirt knotted in front.

On top of these classic looks is her haircut. I so wish I could pull off this sweet pixie cut. (Read more about my hair tribulations here.) Emma Watson does it very, very well.

I am in love. She's dainty, polished, and practical. Yes, I used the word "practical" to describe a style icon. Her simplistic style resembles the charming look we all seem to be going for when we talk about looking like a French sweetheart. As for her look: I call it clean, not overdone, and it has focus, meaning something always tends to stand out in each look. Like the collar or the full skirt in the striped dress, or the giant cowl neck in the knit sweater.

I'd love to see how Seberg's style would have evolved if she'd been with us longer. But, in my opinion, classic looks like these are here to stay and will inspire the rest of us for quite some time.

Stripes and Pearls

As one of the many J.Crew obsessed, I decided to dress in it from head to toe last Friday. I love this tunic dress because it's super straight, not too heavy, and holds its shape VERY well. It's also loose, which makes it easy and delightful for warmer, stickier Texas days. Sometimes I'll belt it, like so, to add a little more shape. I also love how it works with so many shoes! Brogues, sandals, heels. I see it transitioning perfectly into fall with boots and maybe a printed scarf.

Last week I styled it with the military-inspired MacCalister wedge boots (so comfy) and a huge bib of pearls. First of all, these wedges are amazing. I bought them to spice up my shoe collection and I try to wear them every chance I get! Not only are they super functional (i.e. cute, comfy, casual), but they're also really interesting to look at, in my opinion. When I first saw them I thought the shape was a bit odd, but I loved the look and immediately knew they would be perfect for when I wanted to macho-up an outfit. I wear them with cropped jeans, skirts, AND dresses.

And then there are the pearls. If you're wondering if this necklace is heavy, the answer is yes, it is. This necklace is also gorgeous. I first spotted it on a model for the J.Crew wedding collection a few seasons ago. It's such an awesome statement piece that mixes metal with pearls and a few sparkles too. I'll definitely shoot a close-up for you next time I wear it so you can see all the goodness for yourself.
