Cute Buns

They're cute, right?

[Images 1, 2, 3, and 4

I love my trusty top knot, but I'm always looking for a fun way to change it up.
Styles 1 and 3 are nice and messy, just the perfect everyday bun. Then 2 and 4 are a little more fancy but still slightly unpolished and approachable.

Holiday Hair Accessories

Happy Monday! Holiday parties are happening left and right, and I'm STILL trying to put together the perfect holiday party getup. I often turn to some of the most stylish bloggers for a bit of inspiration, and today I'm uber excited to share a guest post from one lovely DC-based blogger, Liz, so she can tell us all about holiday hair accessories. For a holiday party or just a night on the town, all of these little beauties would get me in the mood to celebrate. Read on to see Liz's picks ...

Hi everyone! Liz here, from So Much to Smile About to convince you of the wonders of holiday hair accessories! It’s true - there’s no better time than the holiday season to channel your inner Blair Waldorf and don a perfect headpiece to complete your festive look! Or follow Elizabeth Olsen’s example and add a flapper-esque headband for that extra bit of sparkle! No matter your style, hair accessories are a great way to turn any outfit into a glamorous ensemble. If you’re especially daring, a fascinator is another option for getting into the holiday spirit – just look to Kate Middleton for inspiration! Ban.do and Etsy are some of my favorite places to look, but other online shops like Shopbop and stores like Forever21 and H&M should have lots of options this time of year! Here are a few of my favorite pieces right now…

Style Post: The Librarian Look

High bun + thick glasses + a clean button-up shirt = my favorite librarian look.

I love throwing my locks up into a super high bun, especially when I'm working with day-old hair. Put that with some specs and a collared shirt and I've got myself one librarian look alike. This puff sleeve popover really is one of my favorite new shirts. If I'm going for a more serious librarian/office look, I'd probably style it with one of my pencil skirts and less-wackadoo shoes. But when I'm going for a look that's slightly reserved but not afraid to show some personality, I'm sure to include pieces that add some flare, like fun shoes, a flowy skirt, and red lips.

And I love me some Ruby Woo lipstick from MAC, which I just blogged about yesterday. I'm convinced this is one of the easiest shades of red to wear. It's so creamy and classic.

What do you think of the librarian look?

Bangspiration

My hair has become helpless. I've been growing it out for more than a year for the wedding and finally reached that stage where all I am is bored with it. Hair boredom is what it is. Oddly enough, the only thing I want is to have my bangs back. Yes, the same wretched bangs that have been the sole sore spot of the growing out process. But I don't care. I miss them, and I want to try wearing them for a while with longer hair.

Thankfully there are plenty of inspiring young ladies out there rocking long hair with bangs. I'll be looking at these girls when it comes time to redo my do after the wedding.

Keiko of Keiko Lynn: a pretty girl with pretty bangs that sweep every so nicely across the forehead.

Chan Marshall of Cat Power: I've always admired Chan's super straight hair and bangs.

Zooey Deschanel: She's probably the queen of uber-blunt bangs. I like her with the fringe and the side sweep.

So tell me--what do we think of short bangs with long hair?

Style Post: A Wild Print by the Woods

This is probably the most colorful outfit I've put together in quite a while. The dress has a lot going on: bright yellow and orange along with a crazy tribal/ikat print. I love this dress and I wanted to style it some other colorful pieces that complement what was going on with the dress rather than try to match or overpower it.

We trekked from our apartment to a new location for this shoot (do you like how I'm changing things up)? There's a nice little wooded area across the street and I really liked the look of this fallen tree branch. It's rather huge and made a nice backdrop.

And my hair is finally long enough to wear milk maid braids. Such a fun and easy hairstyle. I often find myself falling back on the same hairstyles day after day, so it was fun to try something very, very new.

P.S. I'm thinking about getting bangs again right after the wedding. What do we think--yes? No? I'll share some bang inspiration in a future post.

My Hopes for Healthier Hair

My hair is not amazing. It's not terrible either. However, I feel like I have yet to get a haircut that's made me say, "oh yea, that's my go-to do." I've experimented with quite a few different styles over that last five years or so: side-swept bangs, a pixie cut, blunt bangs with layered chin-length hair, and blunt bangs with slightly longer hair. As for color, I've played with chunky blond and red highlights, but nothing consistent.

So ever since I got serious about wedding planning last summer, I've been trying to grow my hair out, and fast. When my stylist told me hair grows about half an inch to an inch per month, I had high hopes. Turns out my hair is lazy and has grown a whopping 6 inches in the last 12 months, and that's with only two itty bitty hair trims throughout the process. But 6 inches is still a vast improvement. Some people just have hair that grows really slow!

The length wasn't the only problem, though. As I let my hair grow and refused to get trims every 8 weeks, the more and more damaged my ends started to get. I knew I needed to take a few extra steps to get these locks looking good.

I'm still on my way, but I thought I'd share a few things I've tried to make my hair look healthier.

Vitamins

The first extra step I took was with vitamins. I did a bit of research and determined that a little extra biotin, a vitamin necessary for cell growth, might do the trick. Biotin supplements are usually sold to promote healthier hair, skin, and nails, so I thought I'd give it a try. I consulted with a Whole Foods Whole Body specialist who recommended Maxi-Hair. I read it could take three to six months before there's a noticeable difference, but I think my hair started to feel a little stronger after just two.

JarroSil

I also gave a silicon supplement a try. I took 10 drops a day of this stuff in a glass of water in hopes of stronger hair. I got the idea from Peoples Rx, and I must say I didn't notice much of a difference.

Easy on the heat

I used to straighten, curl, and diffuse my hair like it was going out of style. Too much of all that leads to a lot of breakage. No bueno. Now that my hair has gotten to a length where it can air dry and look decent, I probably only blow dry or straighten once a week. So, yea--I don't style my hair very often, but I when I do it looks healthy.

A trim here and there

We've all heard that getting a regular trim every 8 to 10 weeks or so makes your hair grow faster. I don't know about the "growing faster" part, but it definitely keeps your hair looking fresh and healthy. That's because all the split and damaged ends are going bye-bye before they have a chance to split up the entire strands of hair. I haven't followed this rule to a T, but I should.

Kevin Murphy HYDRATE.ME conditioner

One of the biggest mistakes I've made in the realm of hair care is purchasing low-quality conditioner. Regular conditioners simply coat your hair with a chemical that makes your hair feel silky smooth--it's not actually penetrating your hair with the stuff that moisturizes and conditions it. I learned that and then quickly found Kevin Murphy's HYDRATE.ME conditioner. Amazing? Yes. My hair now feels hydrated without the extra weight of a heavy, moisturizing product.

Moroccan Oil

moroccan oil

Moroccan Oil is one of my more recent discoveries. I started doing some research when I noticed that my ends were constantly feeling drier than the rest of my hair. I've only used it for about a month and I'm definitely noticing a difference. I just rub about a dime-size amount on the ends of my damp hair and style or let it air dry as usual.

I feel like I could write an entire post on each of these, but that's just a high-level snapshot for today.

Got any other tips for healthier hair? If so, do tell.

Shades and Maxi Checks

Bold and bright colors seem to catch my eye lately. From colored denim to printed tops--I'm all over it. But as I try to acquire a few more boldly colored pieces, I have to keep all the brightly colored items that I already own in mind.

Like this pink maxi check shirt from J.Crew. I bought it earlier this year, and the pink seemed like the most subtle option because the darker pink checks blend nicely with the ivory and lighter pink ones. But it's still one of the brighter items in my wardrobe at the moment and serves as a nice, casual pop of color.

I styled it with this cropped vest and distressed jeans. And these platform Madewell sandals have been just another staple of my summer wardrobe. They are really comfortable, look cute styled with almost anything, and give me another three inches or so.

And as for the bun? I know it's up there and makes me look even taller, but it's been a really convenient hair style since I started growing it out again.

How do you incorporate more brightly colored pieces into your wardrobe?
